Let’s Talk About REDMAGIC Cameras

"Why does REDMAGIC have cameras?” - u/Successful-Carrot991

This phone is great, build and design is peerless, but the camera is average. - u/privaterbok

If you've spent any time researching gaming phones, you've seen comments like these.

For years, gaming phones have been associated with incredible performance, massive batteries, advanced cooling systems, and cameras that were an afterthought. Many people still assume that choosing a gaming phone means sacrificing photography altogether.

That's a fair assumption based on older hardware. It's less accurate now.

Gaming Phones Don’t Need to Sacrifice Good Photos

REDMAGIC devices are built differently from traditional flagship smartphones. Every design decision starts with gaming performance and uninterrupted immersion — flagship chipsets, advanced cooling, large batteries, high-refresh-rate displays. Fitting a competitive camera system into that equation means making deliberate tradeoffs, not ignoring photography.

We've never tried to build a camera phone that happens to play games. The goal has always been the opposite: the best gaming phone that still delivers a solid everyday camera. That means a system that captures moments quickly, reliably, and with enough detail that you're happy sharing the result without editing.

That said, we're not going to hide behind specs. Gaming phones carry a camera reputation for a reason, and we'd rather face that directly than pretend it doesn't exist.

REDMAGIC has made genuine leaps in performance, cooling, and display technology over the years. The camera has moved forward too, generation by generation. But there's always that one comment: "Well, the camera isn't that great though…" So instead of responding with spec sheets, let's look at what the camera actually does.

What Actually Matters in Everyday Photography?

Most people aren't shooting magazine covers. They're capturing a meal, a sunset, a moment with friends, the kind of photo you take in two seconds and share the same day. That's where REDMAGIC cameras are built to perform.

The main camera delivers clear detail and balanced colors without much fuss. Whether you're shooting point-and-shoot or dialing into Pro Mode, it responds fast. You're not waiting for the camera app to catch up with the moment.

We've prioritized a camera experience that is stable and responsive. The 50MP main rear camera comes with OIS and an anti-glare coating, which makes a real difference in outdoor light and in motion. The 50MP ultra-wide handles group shots and landscapes without the color shift you'd expect at the edges. For selfies, the 16MP front camera uses AI optimization to sharpen and balance the result without the over-smoothed look that makes processed shots obvious.

None of this competes with a dedicated camera flagship. It's not meant to. For the situations most people actually shoot in, it holds up well.

What Happens When a Photographer Uses a REDMAGIC?

A capable camera only goes so far. Knowing how to use it is the rest.

To see what the hardware could do in experienced hands, creator and photographer Through Jermaine's Lens took the REDMAGIC 11 Pro into the field and challenged himself to shoot landscapes, reflections, street scenes, and natural environments. Jermaine went in knowing REDMAGIC is a gaming phone. He wanted to push it as a photography tool and see what came back.

He used the main camera, Pro Mode controls, deliberate composition, and his standard post-processing workflow. The images he produced showed strong detail, pleasing colors, and creative compositions across different lighting conditions. This is edited work Jermaine processed the photos as part of his normal photography practice, not as raw samples. To see the unedited files straight from the device, his full video has those.

What the results show is that with the right technique, the REDMAGIC 11 Pro produces images that go well beyond what most people expect from a gaming smartphone. Jermaine's conclusion was straightforward: the main camera is capable of impressive results, particularly for users willing to explore Pro Mode and put thought into composition.

Real Shots From the Community

Jermaine's approach is one end of the spectrum. On the other end, REDMAGIC users across our community share photos every day without any post-processing including; travel shots, street photography, food, pets, friends. The quality of those shots has consistently surprised people who assume gaming phones can't deliver.

The camera has continued to evolve with each generation. Combined with AI-powered image optimization and Pro Mode controls, the latest REDMAGIC devices give you more tools to get a shot right in the moment, before any editing.

The Bottom Line

REDMAGIC cameras are designed for the way people use their phones day to day. Sharp photos, balanced colors, reliable point-and-shoot performance — all while powering one of the most advanced gaming experiences on a smartphone.

The old stereotype about gaming phone cameras came from somewhere real. The hardware has moved on. If you've written REDMAGIC off as a camera based on older reviews or forum comments, it's worth taking another look.

We've seen some impressive shots from the community over the years, and we're curious what you've captured. Share your best photo shot on a REDMAGIC device below.
