We track the elaborate REDMAGIC cooling evolution, since the inception of our very first device to our latest flagship release. Now, before we get to the timeline of cooling upgrades, let’s get a better understanding of why cooling matters this much for a gaming smartphone.
Why Do We Need to Improve Cooling Systems?
The simple answer to this question is to keep up with the high-performance hardware and experience we provide. Anyone who owns a gaming smartphone understands that cooling is a critical feature in your device’s arsenal. Your phone’s cooling capacity will directly affect gameplay performance, agility, endurance, and comfort. Modern gaming phones need to evolve to handle PC-level gaming titles with demanding graphics and software.
At REDMAGIC, we do not shy away from providing the latest and greatest processors, chipsets, and capabilities. However, these upgrades generate a substantially larger amount of heat in the process. Without effective cooling systems in place, even the most advanced hardware will begin to throttle, lag, and falter.
Smartphones are also getting slimmer with each iteration, which leaves less space for fans and other cooling apparatus. This forces manufacturers to develop compact cooling solutions that fit new thin designs. Cooling systems have had to evolve and adapt to the rising standards of mobile gaming. Now, let’s examine how we’ve evolved over the years, as illustrated by a timeline of the mobile cooling solutions REDMAGIC gaming smartphones have curated.
Innovation Forged in Ice
Since the beginning, REDMAGIC has been devoted to creating gaming smartphones that exceed expectations, break boundaries, and elevate the gaming experience. Established in 2018, our brand has worked tirelessly throughout the years to innovate and evolve designs with the demands of our fans. For more tangible proof of that commitment, let’s look at how our cooling systems have evolved.
REDMAGIC – First Releases (2018)
The REDMAGIC was released in 2018. Now discontinued, this pioneering technology still holds weight in the history of innovation at our company. This phone was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 and featured up to 8GB of RAM. It also proved to be one of the world’s first gaming smartphones with a cooling system. Soon after, the REDMAGIC Mars debuted with Snapdragon 845 and became the first gaming smartphone with shoulder triggers.
REDMAGIC 3 Series (2019)
Things began to heat up soon when the REDMAGIC 3 made its appearance the next year, becoming the industry’s first gaming smartphone with an active built-in cooling fan and liquid cooling technology. Tests showed that, with the fan turned on, the REDMAGIC 3’s surface temperature would easily drop by up to 1.5 °C. While this is a relatively small difference, it was enough at the time to take the device from around 44°C to between 30 and 40°C once it got too hot. This sets the precedent for the next stages of REDMAGIC cooling evolution.
REDMAGIC 5 Series (2020)
The REDMAGIC 5 Series broke records as the world’s first gaming smartphone with a 144Hz refresh rate. In terms of cooling, the 5 Series evolved greatly with its new and enhanced ICE 4.0 active liquid-cooling system with turbo fan cooling. In the REDMAGIC 5S, the L-shaped liquid-cooling pipe and advanced materials seamlessly enhanced heat transfer and dissipation throughout the phone as well.

This new setup increased the cooling surface area by 55% and the maximum air flow volume by 30%. Compared to its predecessor, the turbo fan would also reach speeds of up to 15,000RPMs, while the liquid-cooling pipe improvements ensured that the REDMAGIC 5G would be 200% cooler. In his teardown of the 5G, JerryRigEverything compared the metallic heat sink of the cooling system to the quality ones found in a PC, highlighting the integrity of the device’s components.
REDMAGIC 6 Series (2021)
The REDMAGIC 6 marked the beginning of our ICE 6.0 cooling system and was the first of our devices to boast the more powerful 20,000 RPM turbo fan that became a part of the next few generations of REDMAGIC smartphones.
The 6 Series was the world’s first set of gaming smartphones with a 165Hz refresh rate mobile display. However, the cooling of these phones was greatly refined as well. With the addition of a larger vapor chamber and improved internal heat transfer materials, the 6 Series took a new approach to thermal management. On the back of the REDMAGIC 6 Pro, a large aviation-grade aluminum plate also helped the phone stay cooler for longer.
REDMAGIC 7 Series (2022)
The launch of our REDMAGIC 7 Series was a triumph that saw the debut of the world’s first gaming smartphones with UDC technology and a true full-screen display. In the REDMAGIC 7, the ICE 8.0 setup used a combination of air and liquid cooling to create a passive and active cooling system. Advanced heat transfer materials, including an aerospace-grade phase-changing material, were also layered inside the system to improve heat dissipation, along with a 20,000 RPM turbofan.
In our REDMAGIC 7 and the REDMAGIC 7 Pro, a second air intake slot on the back of the phones drastically increased airflow without the need for a second turbofan. The 7 Pro also sported the 9.0 Cooling System and an upgraded and larger vapor chamber, along with a redesigned back plate for better heat conductivity. In the 7S Pro, users could enjoy the updated ICE 10.0 Multi-dimensional Cooling System, which featured a tenth layer to increase the air-cooled heat dissipation.
REDMAGIC 8 Series (2023)
Our 8 Series ushered in a new era for REDMAGIC. The 8 Pro came with the advanced ICE 11.0, which had 10 layers of cooling technology, all stacked into the neat little frame. The most notable improvement since the previous cooling system was the double-layered vapor chamber cooling plating over the back panel of the phone, including the battery. The screen of the phone also featured a dedicated graphing layer meant to draw heat away from your fingertips as you play. In the 8S Pro, we boosted cooling efficiency by a staggering 60% to make the device 2°C colder.
REDMAGIC 9 Series (2023)
The 9 Series saw the debut of our REDMAGIC ICE 13.0 and 13.5 cooling systems, housed within the REDMAGIC 9 Pro and 9S Pro, respectively. In the 9 Pro, the ICE 13.0 cooling system reduced temperatures by up to 18°C. The 9S Pro took things further with a unique layer of Frost Cooling Gel, an advanced material that enhances thermal efficiency by an impressive 20% compared to previous conductive materials.
A larger cooling chamber in this generation also allowed the centrifugal turbofan to draw more air into the device, making the 9 Pro better equipped to dissipate heat effectively, enhancing the overall thermal performance of the device during prolonged gaming sessions.
REDMAGIC 10 Series (2024)
The 10th generation of REDMAGIC gaming smartphones broke several records in the industry, with the 10 Pro being the first gaming phone with a 1.5K full-screen BOE x REDMAGIC AMOLED display, 7,050 mAh battery, and 1.25mm ultra-narrow bezel. In terms of cooling, the 10 Pro made headlines as the first smartphone with liquid metal cooling technology, typically found in gaming laptops.
Our lighter 10 Air model featured a 9-layer ICE-X Cooling system with liquid metal. On the other hand, the 10 Pro’s ICE-X system featured an 11-layer cooling structure, including an upgraded vapor chamber, optimized thermal conductivity, and advanced graphene and copper insulation. Central to all these systems is a groundbreaking alloy-based solid-state liquid metal, which represents a significant leap in cooling technology.
With a thermal conductivity of 80 W/mK, liquid metal is 13 times more effective than traditional cooling solutions. However, it was still too fluid for a mobile device. To manage viscosity challenges, REDMAGIC processed the liquid metal into a solid-state piece for the first time. This pioneering solid metal piece sits between the fan and the vapor chamber to quickly transfer heat from the VC to the fan, efficiently dissipating it and improving performance.
The 10 Pro also comes armed with 12,000mm² vapor chamber, a 23,000 RPM fan, and additional layers of graphene to pull heat away from critical components. Later on, the 10S Pro released and also featured a 10-layer design, however, this time its cooling was reinforced with repositioned Liquid Metal 2.0.
In the 10S Pro, Liquid Metal 2.0 was placed directly over the chip, providing 30% more coverage and reducing the CPU temperature by up to 5°C when compared to the 10 Pro. This decision ensures efficient heat dissipation for smoother gameplay and consistent stability.
In our last offering from the 10th generation, the 12,000 mm² vapor chamber and 23,000 RPM turbo fan ensured stable frame rates and prevented throttling for a smooth gaming, along with the added graphene and copper insulation. Now, a new REDMAGIC challenger is about to arrive and once again, change the cooling game forever.
